Mama and Daddy are sitting in front of Lem and Ann Harper. This is a picture that was on display among many others at Lem's funeral a couple of years ago. When I saw this picture, a flood of memories rushed into my mind. Dad and Lem worked together for years at Blendspun and they had become good friends. Lem and Ann spent alot of time with my parents. They eventually went in together on a piece of land and a trailer down at Maribel in Pamlico county. From this fish camp between Harper Point and Smith Creek, they fished and crabbed and cooked and laughed and enjoyed time together and with each other's families. We have lots of good memories surrounding that place, mom and dad, the Harpers and the others who came to visit.
Years after her Dad's funeral, I got a chance to ask Verna Harper Sebald if she would send the photo for me to scan. It just came last week, so now I can share it with you. Verna and Karen tell me that this picture was taken at Hammock's Beach State Park on Bear Island. I don't remember the particular day, but I recognize the clothes Mom and Dad are wearing. I do remember the good times we had back in those years and lots of good times since then.
We miss Lem and Ann. This picture brings back alot of memories and it reminds me to cherish the precious days we have been given to enjoy those we hold dear.

little hand and daddy's fingers
This is just an old shot of Audrey as a newborn. It's funny how you can dismiss a picture as "not so great", and then you go back to it a year later when the baby is walking and you are startled by the effect the photo has on you. This is just another one of those.
Luke eats cornbread
Luke uses his powerful little brain and does what he thinks is "best" and "right". We find him eating crumbly cornbread in the bathtub. The mess was easy to clean up. Bless your little heart.
Our church remembers
TMBC honored veterans this past Sunday. Wade and Josh brought some friends with them all dressed out in blues and green.
Sarah, Franky and Connor
Guess who granddaddy saw when he stepped up in front of the church with the choir? Connor and Sarah and Franky had come to hear me sing. Well, they DID hear granddaddy sing, but that is really not what they came for.
Christian Soldiers
Our church has started a chapter of the Christian Soldiers Motorcycle Club. Here are some of the soldiers heading out on the "Toys for Tots" toy run on November 22, 2008.
TMBC
Brother Bernice (Burn-iss), spoke at the Trenton Missionary Baptist Church's first Hunter's Fellowship meeting. He told us a story about a young marine who went hunting with them on their hunting club land. The young man told a story about the time out in Montana when he had shot a deer that was running at full speed 900 yards away and when he got to the deer he found a clean shot right through the deer's heart.
Brother Bernice, not wanting to call him a liar, told him a story of his own. Brother Bernice went on to tell this story.....He had been hunting once and hit a deer, but didn't kill it. It ran into the woods and Bernice followed. When he got to the place where the deer had disappeared into the woods he found blood. He followed the trail and the deer jumped up in front of him and started to run again. Bernice tried another shot, but his gun was empty, so he took out his hunting knife and tore out after the deer. The deer was about to lose him but came to the river and jumped in. Bernice jumped right in on top of him and got ahold of him in the water and took his huntin' knife and cut its throat and that finished him off.
While Bernice was dragging that deer out of the woods, what do you think he stumbled upon? Laying there in front of him, dead, was the deer he had shot at earlier.

crow eating
A crow on a pole pecking at a small morsel of food that he is holding with his feet. I took this photo in New Bern around August 20, 2008. Stella and Luke were with me. We fed the gulls in a parking lot near McDonald's.

Whooping Cranes spend Winter in Jones County
Did I ever tell you about the winter that the whooping cranes spent the winter just a few miles from where I live? I never knew about it until they were gone. Read the article here http://www.ncwildlife.org/pg09_NCWildStore/pg9a1.htm . Click on the link and then look at the drop down box for sample articles and read Winter of the Whooping Cranes. I did find one teacher at Comfort Elementary School who saw the cranes once on her daily drives to work. I passed right by them for the 3 months that they were here, but I never caught a glimpse of them.
These cranes were later killed by the Tornado that hit Florida sometime last year or the year before. Very unfortunate, but the project will continue and there will again soon be an eastern migratory flock of Whooping Cranes. Maybe they'll drop in here in Jones County again one day?
