A crow on a pole pecking at a small morsel of food that he is holding with his feet. I took this photo in New Bern around August 20, 2008. Stella and Luke were with me. We fed the gulls in a parking lot near McDonald's.

Whooping Cranes spend Winter in Jones County
Did I ever tell you about the winter that the whooping cranes spent the winter just a few miles from where I live? I never knew about it until they were gone. Read the article here http://www.ncwildlife.org/pg09_NCWildStore/pg9a1.htm . Click on the link and then look at the drop down box for sample articles and read Winter of the Whooping Cranes. I did find one teacher at Comfort Elementary School who saw the cranes once on her daily drives to work. I passed right by them for the 3 months that they were here, but I never caught a glimpse of them.
These cranes were later killed by the Tornado that hit Florida sometime last year or the year before. Very unfortunate, but the project will continue and there will again soon be an eastern migratory flock of Whooping Cranes. Maybe they'll drop in here in Jones County again one day?
